The International Quidditch Association made it official last Tuesday: the 2027 Quidditch World Cup will be held in New Zealand, with the Rotorua International Magical Stadium serving as the primary venue. The announcement ended three years of speculation, two failed bids from Brazil, and one diplomatic incident involving the Bulgarian Ministry of Magic that we are legally advised not to describe in detail.

Here is everything you need to know before the group stage draw, which takes place on September 14th.

The Confirmed Teams

Sixteen nations have qualified through the regional championships. Five are making their World Cup debut, which is the highest number of first-time qualifiers since 1994. The full list of confirmed teams is as follows:

• Europe: England, Ireland, Bulgaria, France, Spain, Poland
• Americas: United States, Brazil, Canada, Peru
• Asia-Pacific: Japan, Australia, New Zealand (host), India
• Africa & Middle East: Uganda, Morocco

The Two Rule Changes

The IQA's rules committee passed two amendments before the tournament that have divided opinion across the competitive Quidditch world.

• The Snitch Timer Rule: If the Golden Snitch has not been caught within 90 minutes of match start, the Snitch is temporarily recalled and the game continues on points until a reset occurs. Designed to prevent the Snitch from rendering high-scoring matches meaningless. Controversial because it changes the fundamental structure of the sport.
• Bludger Weight Standardisation: All Bludgers must now conform to IQA weight specifications within a 2% tolerance. Previously, national leagues used different specifications. Teams with physically larger Beaters — notably Bulgaria and the United States — have objected formally.

Quidditch has always ended when the Snitch is caught. Changing that is not a rule amendment. It's a different sport.

Ones to Watch

Ireland arrive as defending champions following their 2022 victory and have since built what many analysts consider the deepest squad in their history. England, by contrast, have restructured entirely since their quarter-final exit last cycle and are an unknown quantity — exciting or worrying depending on your perspective.

The genuine wildcard is Uganda, making their second World Cup appearance after a first-round exit in 2022. Under new head coach Amara Diallo, they have posted twelve consecutive wins in African Championship qualifiers playing an aggressive press style no international team has faced at this level before.

Tickets and Travel

• Group stage tickets: Available via the IQA Portkey ticketing system from July 1st. Prices start at 30 Galleons.
• Semi-finals and Final: Ballot system only. Applications open August 1st and close August 31st.
• Portkey travel packages: The New Zealand Ministry of Magic is coordinating international Portkey routes from 47 departure points. Full schedule to be announced in July.
• Muggle-proofing: The IQA has confirmed the stadium will use an enhanced Muggle-Repelling Charm augmented with new Confundus array technology trialled at last year's European Championships.
